Indiana becomes 45th State to pass Religious Freedom Resolution for the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Chicago, IL

Archons met with the Lt Governor and other State officials. With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, the Archons of the Metropolis of Chicago and the Metropolis of Detroit, led by Regional Commanders Gus M. Pablecas, John G. Manos, and Lazaros Kircos, were pleased to learn that Governor Eric Holcomb endorses the action taken by the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives to pass religious freedom resolutions SR2 and HR28. This was realized during a recent meeting with Lt Governor Suzanne Crouch who informed them of this news. Special recognition is given to Indiana Representative Robert Morris and the hard work of National Council member Archon Thomas Cappas and Archon Chris Rongos who also contributed to the passage of this resolution. Indiana is now the 45th State to fully pass religious freedom resolutions in support of the Mother Church of Constantinopole.

This meeting concludes the highly successful joint effort of the Archons in both Metropolises to gain passage in Indiana since 2016. Both resolutions call on the Turkish government to respect the religious freedoms and rights of the minority Greek Orthodox Church in the predominantly Muslim nation following decades of legal disputes, confiscation of properties, and the closing of the only seminary serving Orthodox Christians in Turkey in 1971.

In 2006, the Order of Saint Andrew (Archons) initiated the Religious Freedom Resolution project. The goal of this project, which represents one component of the overall, multi-faceted Religious Freedom Initiative, is the adoption of Religious Freedom Resolutions in support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in each individual state within the United States. The project has been overseen nationally by Archon Stephen Georgeson. To date, 45 of the 50 states have passed resolutions as part of this national effort.
