At a time when a nation's psyche is shaken to its foundation with the unthinkable evil that befell a community in Connecticut; when Christians are persecuted in 131 of the 193 countries of the world (2011 Pew Forum study); when our suffering Hellenic brothers and sisters have already fallen off their fiscal cliff and are demonstrating Winston Churchill's "Heroes fight like Greeks" strength of character in their recovery, I believe we must redouble our efforts to bring our Lord and Savior closer to our everyday lives and to live our Orthodox Faith with the zeal, fervor and steadfastness of our spiritual fathers led by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew... and there is no better time to do this than Christmas. Beloved Commander Emeritus Dr. Chris Philip recuperating from open heart surgery

I just learned today from Mrs. Irene Philip, the wife of our dear Commander Emeritus Dr. Chris Philip, that the Commander Emeritus recently underwent emergency open heart surgery on November 30th, the Feastday of Saint Andrew, the First Called Apostle. Archon Dr. Chris is now home recuperating and is resting comfortably. Full Text

Today, during the Divine Liturgy our heart and attention were directed in thought and prayer for those who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Connecticut, USA, especially the tender children and their caring teachers. We stand in silent prayer and tears beside their siblings, parents, and extended family, as well as the community and entire American nation, as we mourn the loss of innocence and extinguishing of dreams. It was the holy angels who appeared to the shepherds on Christmas day and proclaimed, Glory to God in the highest for the remarkable event of our Savior’s birth. On December 16 at 6PM, the Archdiocesan Byzantine and Youth Choirs of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese will join their voices to those of the angels in singing praises to God and offering Him thanksgiving for His Son’s birth. The Hellenic-American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) recognized The Order of Saint Andrew and its National Commander during their 40th Annual Dinner Dance Gala, Friday, October 26.
