The president of Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate, Professor Mehmet Görmez, has voiced his support for the reopening the Greek Orthodox Halki (Heybeliada) Seminary, which has been closed since 1971, saying that it is a fundamental right of non-Muslims living in Turkey to raise their own theologians. The Four Freedoms Medals are presented to men and women whose achievements have demonstrated a commitment to those principles which President Roosevelt proclaimed in his historic speech to Congress on January 6, 1941, as essential to democracy: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, freedom from fear.
