The April 1 Metro article “A new community spirit” was right to highlight the controversy surrounding Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s participation in the opening of the Diyanet Center of America. But there’s another point to be made. The freedom of religion enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and cherished by Americans — the very freedom to worship that Marylanders will enjoy at this new mosque — does not exist inside Mr. Erdogan’s country. 50th Anniversary of Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle

The Order of St. Andrew of the Ecumenical Patriarchate was organized on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, March 10, 1966 when His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos conferred upon thirty outstanding laymen of the Church the various Offikia or Offices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on behalf of His All Holiness Patriarch Athenagoras of blessed memory. They were honored because of their love, loyalty and support of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Full Text


The Economist reports on 'A Catholic-Orthodox meeting is spectacular but not unprecedented'

THE announcement of a meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, due to take place in Cuba on February 12th, is certainly a spectacular moment in inter-church diplomacy. But contrary to many reports that have appeared in the press this weekend, it is certainly not the first top-level encounter between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches since the East-West schism of 1054.
