Fordham University Professor and Archon National Commander to be guest speakers at Symposium, May 7

The Order of Saint Andrew’s Philadelphia region will be hosting its third annual symposium entitled, “Saint John Chrysostom on Fasting: What’s the Point?” and “The Ecumenical Patriarchate: What’s the Latest?” at Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall, PA, Saturday, May 7, 2011.

Aristotle Papanikolaou, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Theology and co-founder of the Orthodox Christian Studies program at Fordham University will be the guest speaker for the first part of the symposium.

Can fasting be strict or lax, mandatory or optional, carnal or spiritual?  What is the purpose and goal of fasting?  We, as Orthodox Christians, are graced that our own 4th Century Archbishop of Constantinople, Saint John Chrysostom, wrote and delivered homilies on the very subject of fasting so that it was clear what was expected of us.  He asked, “Do you fast?  Give me proof of it by your works… And let not only the mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all members of your bodies.”  Dr. Papanikolaou will explore Saint John Chrysostom’s homilies on fasting and answer the question, “What’s the Point of Fasting?”

Anthony J. Limberakis, M.D., National Commander of the Order of Saint Andrew, will be the guest speaker for the second half of the symposium.

Fresh off the International Archon Religious Freedom Conference in Brussels, Belgium and Turkey’s returning the confiscated Patriarchal Orphanage to the Ecumenical Patriarchate; the Order of Saint Andrew continues to fight for religious freedom for the Holy See of Constantinople, the Ecumenical Patriarchate. National Commander Limberakis will offer updates on the very latest developments from meetings with government officials and religious leaders in Budapest, Berlin, Ankara and Istanbul during the Order’s recent ‘Religious Freedom Mission’ to the European Union.

His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey will also be offering his personal reflections on fasting and will provide his 21st century perspective to conclude the day.

The symposium is open to all Archons, their spouses, and other Orthodox faithful interested in the religious freedom pursuit for the Ecumenical Patriarchate. A detailed itinerary can be found below and further questions for information can be directed to Dr. Cary Limberakis at 215-643-3347 or cjldmd@verizon.net.
