President Gorbachev will be the recipient of the Athenagoras Human Rights Award, established in 1986 honoring Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras who served as Archbishop of the Americas for 18 years before being elected Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 1948. He will be invested with the Class of 2005, on Sunday, October 23, at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York. Dr. Anthony Limberakis, the Order’s National Commander, said “We are proud to have as our toastmaster, our fellow archon, George Tenet, who has so distinguished himself in national service, faithful to his Church and heritage.”

Mr. Tenet served as CIA Director from July of 1997 to until his resignation in June 2004. He previously served as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of Intelligence Programs at the National Security Council, and on President Clinton’s national security transition team.
