The Hellenic Medical Society is honoring Archon George A. Tsougarakis as Hellene of the Year. This prestigious and respected award will be conferred upon Archon Tsougarakis at the Hellenic Medical Society’s Annual Scholarship Gala, which will be held at Guastavino’s in New York City on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 7PM ET.

Archon George A. Tsougarakis is a member of St. John the Theologian Cathedral in Tenafly, New Jersey, where he has served on the Parish Council for more than 20 years in numerous positions, including president, and is currently the director of its Sunday School. During his 35-year career as an attorney in New York City, Archon Tsougarakis represented -- on a pro bono basis -- the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Ecumenical Patriarchate and several related entities in a number of matters, including the fight for the rightful return of priceless ecclesiastical manuscripts that were stolen from a monastery in northern Greece. In 2020, he left private practice, and now serves as the full-time General Counsel to the Archdiocese.

George lives in Englewood with his wife, Evangelia Poneros, a talented attorney and committed Hellene. They are the proud parents of two capable adults, Kira and Andoni. He was invested as Archon in 2011 and conferred with the offikion Dikaiophylax.
